Brighton Carpenter

My sister had her first baby a few weeks ago! To celebrate little Evie's first EVER Christmas I made her a toy box using different timbers: Oak, Pine, Sycamore, Walnut, Ash and Cherry. It's finished with Danish oil. I don't know how long it will be before she attacks it with her felt tip pens but I hope she ends up treasuring it for years to come.

Oak staircase

I normally work in and around Brighton but sometimes travel a bit further afield. This job took me all the way to the Isle of Mann! The staircase was for a timber framed building. It was a really beautiful place and I wanted the staircase to do it justice. Sometimes it's hard to fit finished joinery around the rustic angles and curves of oak beams but I think I got it about right.

Brighton shop front

I don't normally do commercial work but when the vintage clothes retailer 'Beyond Retro' approached me to design a shop front for their new Brighton store I jumped at the chance. The shop is located in the trendy North Laines area of Brighton and it was nice working so centrally in such a bustling atmosphere. The building was listed so my brief was to replicate the original doors quite closely. I came up with a design which kept the industrial feel of the original bi-fold sliding doors. The georgian wired glass I used was in keeping with this industrial look.
The Beyond Retro lettering on the doors is a stick on vinyl as is the anchor logos on the windows. All in all a great job to take on! The clients are really happy and it's good walking past the shop knowing the work that went into them... pretty cool!

The original sliding doors.. the building was being used as a car park.

My design for the new shop front

Fitting took three days..

All done on schedule for the grand opening!

Oak dressing room

Most of my work is based around Brighton but some jobs are worth travelling for. This job was for a client in Kew, London. The wardrobe doors are bookmatched veneered and "touch to open". the whole job is spray lacquered for a beautifully even finish. A really nice job and worth the travel!

Sunbeam Doors

This Brighton property needed a Carpenter to make some doors to their kitchen. They asked for something a bit different and they wanted the new doors to let more light in than the existing solid ones. I came up with this sunbeam design which they loved! The original opening was square so I carried out all the work to form an arch. The doors were then varnished and the walls were plastered and decorated so the job was finished properly.

Brighton Carpenter

This job was in Brighton. The client wanted a clean minimal look for their wardrobe in the master bedroom. I have a very good sprayer who gets a perfect finish on all his work. His speciality is high gloss doors which are very popular at the moment. All the doors on this unit are "touch to open."

Brighton Carpenter

Quite a popular request from customers these days are floating shelves. By hiding the battens which support the shelves you get a nice clean look. Pretty cool!

Brighton Carpenter

I designed this walnut seating area for a property in the centre of Brighton. The client was really pleased to have somewhere to put his pacman table and the design made good use of an awkward area in the house.

Bookshelf staircase

This is a staircase/step ladder leading up to a loft conversion. the client wanted it enclosed and shelved out to store the many books she'd collected over the years.. a really nice job!

Awkward space?... No problem

Under-stairs cupboards or wardrobes which follow the pitch of a roof not only look great, they're also an ideal solution to making the most out of awkward spaces. This wardrobe is full depth to allow clothes to hang easily and it's got slide out drawers and tie rails to organise even the untidiest bedroom!

Oak Decking

This property in Hanover, Brighton had a small back garden with uneven cracked concrete. I layed black matting down before laying the decking to stop the weeds from growing up through the cracks in the concrete. The decking made the garden look alot bigger, and the curve along the decking edge made the whole job look a bit special! It's nice working outside when the sun's shining too! Nice sun tan, but a sore back!

Brighton Dresser

This Brighton property had a fairly narrow kitchen diner. The client wanted a dresser style unit to sit a small TV on and to store kitchen books and crockery etc. The unit was painted in the workshop to cause the least upheaval on site. We fitted the unit in a day and the client was delighted with the result... another happy customer!

Beech Wardrobe

This beech wardrobe was for a property in Henfield, just outside Brighton. The client wanted to use as much of the space as possible. This included using a fully folding bi-fold door which reveals a pair of large drawers.

Period shutters

Many properties in Brighton have old shutters that either don't work very well or they've been taken off completely or someone has folded them permanently back and painted over them so they're stuck for good! I've refurbished existing shutters before or, like this job, made brand new shutters that fold back into their original pockets. It's a nice feeling reinstating period windows back to their former glory.

Curved Cherry wardrobe

This is the same property in Hanover Brighton that I fitted the curved alcove unit. As you walked into the bedroom and looked right there wasn't enough depth for a wardrobe between the door frame and the wall. What I designed was for the wardrobe to curve into the room so that the majority of it could be used for hanging clothes. The less deep section near the door was still used for shelving. The doors of this unit are book-matched veneered in cherry and operate on "touch to open" catches. This was a tricky old job but the result was very satisfying indeed!
